The Freedom of Choice Act - Fight It!

When Leif and I lived in Hawaii we lived in the heart of Waikiki. Thousands of people swarm the streets of Waikiki on a daily basis. During the time we lived there an anti-abortion campaign chose Waikiki as their prime spot to make their point. They would drive a huge box truck along the streets. On the walls of the truck there were huge images of aborted babies bodies. It was incredibly disturbing. HOWEVER, it got the point across loud and clear. Abortion is horrifically wrong! It is not a political issue. It's not democrat or republican. It's not Bush or Obama. It is Right or Wrong!
Abortion is WRONG!

There will be a bill placed before congress in the near future. This bill is called The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). If this bill is passed and then signed by the president, women will have unrestricted access to abortion throughout the country. President Elect Obama has already agreed to sign the bill if it is passed by congress. So it needs to be stopped before it gets that far. There is a petition being created that will be sent to congress. You can find this petition on FightFOCA.com It is very easy to put your name on the petition. I hope you will take a minute to do what you can for this cause.

The following is a clip of Obama's statement to Planned Parenthood saying that he will sign The Freedom of Choice Act.

Unfortunatly we are only getting what we voted for. Obama promised change and change is what he is going to do. Change things that are wrong into things that are right. When you vote for a democrat, you vote for someone who is pro choice and believes in abortion.

I will do my part to fight it, but when such a huge part of America wanted this man and his "changes" it is going to be hard to fight.

Thanks for posting this Lena. I think TOO MANY of us sit on the sidelines, watch & don't think there's anything we can do as we watch the world get more and more engulfed in sin. The problem is that it's happening BECAUSE we're not standing up and voicing our oppositing to it.
I signed the petition. This was the major factor in me voting for McCain. I think people were looking for change so much that they overlooked the critical issues - like abortion.

And thus it has begun, I don't think that people really were informed of what or who they were voting for when they voted Obama. It was just the "cool" thing to do. This is only the beginning, mark my word. Today is the first day of the end of the world. Satan is fighting tooth and nail for things like this. Now it's time for the strong to stand and defend truth and right. Thanks for the blog post Lena!

My dear Lena girl,

I agree with you to a point - abortion is wrong and I personally would not make that choice. Where I do not agree is interfering with someone else's choice on the matter.

With that being said, I feel like everyone must take all the facts into consideration:

Women would not have unrestricted access to abortions.

1. The act states, "It is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose...to terminate a pregnancy after fetal viability when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman.

2. Under the act, states are permitted to ban abortion after fetal viability except when necessary to protect the life or health of a woman.

3.Prior to the Roe v. Wade decision, an estimated 1,200,000 women each year were forced to resort to illegal abortions, despite the known hazards that included unsanitary conditions, incompetent treatment, infection, hemorrhage, disfiguration, and death.

4. Prior to 1973, as many as 5,000 women died each year in the United States as a result of having an illegal abortion.

5. In countries where abortion remains illegal, the risk of complications and maternal mortality is high. According to the World Health Organization, of the approximately 600,000 pregnancy-related deaths occurring annually around the world, 80,000 are associated with unsafe abortions.

6. 87 percent of the counties in the United States have no abortion provider.

7. Legal barriers to the full range of reproductive services endanger the health and lives of women.

8. Women should have meaningful access to reproductive health services to prevent unintended pregnancies, thereby reducing the need for abortions.

But aside from all these statistics - even the Church's view allows for a woman to have abortions performed under certain circumstances - namely when (quoting directly from LDS.org):

Pregnancy results from rape or incest, or

• A competent physician determines that the life or health of the mother is in serious jeopardy, or

• A competent physician determines that the fetus has severe defects that will not allow the baby to survive beyond birth.

This is precisely in line with the FOCA (actually the FOCA would be more restrictive than the Church bc the state's are allowed to ban abortions except for when the health and life of the mother are in danger - there is no stated exception for rape, incest, or if the fetus has severe defects).

The Church has stated that abortion is a most serious matter and should be considered only after the persons involved have consulted with their local church leaders and feel through personal prayer that their decision is correct.

The Church has not favored or opposed legislative proposals or public demonstrations concerning abortion.

Sorry for such a LONG post! Much love girl...
